Nike ZoomX Vaporfly NEXT% 2 “OG” Nods to the Genesis of the Breaking2 Project

Nike‘s ZoomX Vaporfly NEXT% 2 has released in an “OG” colorway that nods to the genesis of the Breaking2 project by replicating the “Ice Blue/University Red” color scheme used on 2017’s Zoom Vaporfly Elite. As any Nike Running fan will recall, the Breaking2 project — helmed by the late Sandy Bodecker — was a Swoosh “moonshot” initiative to break the two-hour marathon barrier. Though Breaking2 wasn’t successful until 2019, its first attempt in 2017 did set a then-world marathon record and saw elite runners like Eliud Kipchoge take the track in a very specific blue and red Zoom Vaporfly Elite colorway. Therefore, this new ZoomX Vaporfly NEXT% 2 is a salute to that moment in running history.

The shoe’s top half is built from an icy blue Atomknit material, with a large black medial Swoosh swooping up from the toebox to the heel and a smaller black lateral Swoosh appearing directly under the collar. These details stand in stark contrast to the red “mudguard” on the forefoot and toebox, which is adorned with white print. Heels add stopwatch and Nike Running-inspired graphics into the mix as well.

Down below, the soft ZoomX foam midsole comes to a sharp point at the heel. Inside its cushy foam folds sits the ZoomX Vaporfly NEXT% 2’s signature technological innovation: a full-foot carbon fiber plate that provides exemplary energy return, enabling the wearer to run faster and longer without fatigue. Stripped-back outsoles place rubber in high-wear areas under the forefoot and heel to enhance durability and complete the look.

The Nike ZoomX Vaporfly NEXT% 2 “OG” is available now at Nike GB. Its MSRP is set at a standard $225 USD.
