TikTok Wants Users To Stop Doing The Milk Crate Challenge, Please

Farewell, Milk Crate Challenge. We hardly knew ye.

If you’ve somehow managed to avoid seeing the challenge on TikTok, Twitter, and Facebook over the past week, it goes like this: Participants gather a bunch of those plastic grocery-store milk crates, stack them upside down in successive, ever-higher towers, and then try to scale the whole pile while walking upright, usually with less than stellar results.

The challenge has produced a few impressive feats of human athleticism, sure, but some of its most viral video entrants document backbreaking (not literally, we hope, though it’s hard to tell) falls that make it clear attempting to summit the milk crate mountain is ill-advised at best.

Because the challenge poses a physical risk, TikTok has blocked hashtags commonly associated with it, and has removed an undisclosed number of Milk Crate Challenge videos.

“TikTok prohibits content that promotes or glorifies dangerous acts, and we remove videos and redirect searches to our Community Guidelines to discourage such content,” a company spokesperson told Business Insider. “We encourage everyone to exercise caution in their behavior whether online or off.”

Users who try to search for #milkcratechallenge and #cratechallenge are served a “No results found” notification, along with a warning that the hashtag “may be associated with behavior or content that violates our guidelines.”

TikTok didn’t say whether it’s outright scrubbing all Milk Crate Challenge videos from its app, or if it’s only taking down a portion of them.

Not all platforms are doing away with the challenge. Searching for it on YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter still pulls up results…for now.
